CLA204H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Theogony, Iron Age, Hector
Document Summary
Zeus and the human race: prometheus and the origins of humankind. To hesiod, human kind is on the margins of this larger events in the cosmos with the gods. In theogony, there is a particular aim and context. In works and days, there is a different context and aim. They are meant to address specific issues and questions, and change depending on historical circumstances. Prometheus: a titan (fore-thought) in theogony, occurs as part of the succession of the gods; would have been released by zeus from inside earth. Zeus is still the boss of the titans despite being their junior. Hesiod starts with the punishment of prometheus as part of zeus showing his power and restaining forces. He fastened prometheus on a station and got an eagle to feed on his liver again every night, because he stole fire and gave it to the humans. Humans seem almost incidental in context of the story.
