Document Summary
Every culture has its own myths: myths tell us a lot about the values of a culture, greek and roman religion are separate from myth, yet they are connected. Three basic types of myth (these categories aren"t clear cut: divine myth- most myths are divine myths. These are myths about the gods: legend-these involve humans, folktale. Divine myth: characters are supernatural, no definite setting or place, sometimes attempts to explain some phenomenon or practice. This is called ethology: not to be confused with religion, sometimes explain real things (it thunders because zeus does it). Legend: relates to hero or heroine, set in the remote past, deals with humans. It is more about doing something beyond regular humanity, like being really smart or strong: heroes are often morally ambiguous. Ancient greece and rome: rome were the inheritors of the greek tradition the romans conquered the greeks and took over parts of their culture. The myths existed before they were written down.
