A republic is a structure of government we have today - not radical as athenian democracy. Romans were proud that they were a republic and gotten over kingship due to bad experiences. Officials are elected democratically and people vote for representatives; it lasted for 500 years = longest standing government in history. The roman republic ended with an extend period of political instability full of civil wars. Civil wars consisted of roman officials (generals/senators) representatives of some sort, forming alliances and turning on each other on various power plays. There are thousand of romans dying in a series of civil war/backstabbing. He defeats mark anthony - the unstableness of the republic comes to an end. He is the first emperor and hated kingship as well, augustus always rejects the title of king. He pretends that it is a continuation of the republic.
