CLA204H1 Lecture Notes - Aegisthus, Clytemnestra, Valentina Vostok
Document Summary
Agamemnon - oresteia: oresteia trilogy by aeschylus. Sleeping with him while agamemnon was away. Cassandra was being brought back as a slave. Clytemnestra might have thought she was a concubine. Clytemnestra angry: iphigeneia, power, family curse, affair with aegisthus, cassandra? (hyginus 117?) Aegisthus and clytemnestra kill agamemnon and cassandra. She puts a magical cloak on him that he can"t get out of (binding) In most myths, aegisthus shows up and they stab agamemnon. In some myths clytemnestra is the one who does the killing (a"s plan) Clytemnestra usually kills cassandra after this (cass. knows she will die) This is not a good thing to do in the greek world. Orestes should rule when his father dies. Aegisthus and clytemnestra are tyrants ruling the city. Orestes, agamemnon"s son, raised in exile, will grow up avenge father. Taken away by his sister to be raised in exile. Ts pandora pattern--she is a negative woman. Nobody tries to defend her in greek myth.
