On paper, or in the imagination, fantastic creatures enable us to tell stories that go beyond the limits of everyday experiences in static. Even in static visual arts, like sculpture or painting, they retain their capacity for inspiring awe. However as moving, speaking figures on stage or on the cinema screen, fantastic creatures can seem absurd rather than awe-inspiring, silly rather than sublime. This was especially the case in pre-cgi films. Traditional cinema consumption, informed by the hegemonic classical hollywood style, assumed belief in the reality of on-screen worlds with fantastic creatures puts this belief in jeopardy. Consequently, it is in the genre of fantastic films, where the questioning of reality is a central theme, that myth finds a more natural cinematic home.
