Document Summary
I had to use a pdf from a book for this, which is also on blackboard. In this dialogue by the philosopher and historian xenophon, socrates and a friend are discussing household management (oikonomikos, whence we get our word "economics", literally means "household management"). Socrates tells his friend about a conversation that he once had with a man named ischomachus, who is able to maintain a busy public life because his private life is so well-managed. In this passage, socrates is quoting his conversation with ischomachus. Ischomachus tells socrates how he trained his wife to maintain their home properly. She was very young and inexperienced when they were first married, he says, but she was an eager student who learned quickly. It"s worth noting that some people think that the ischomachus in this dialogue is named after an actual person whom we know from another source.
