COG250Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Uncanny Valley, Mary Douglas, Prototype Theory
Document Summary
Prototype theory does not give us a good account of how we combine theories together. Fuzzy logic when put in prototype theory, strange, technically results. Assumptions that concepts are a feature list, the sole concept is to label the world, these are automatic assumptions. Concepts are not supposed to be labelled, but to understand the world. It can capture a lot of the logical relations that are found in the classical theory. Says that not relations are logical relations like necessity and efficiency, a lot of the relations are structural or functional relations, like steps or levels. A theory is a structure of relations that can predict. Most of our concepts are theories that are structural logical, concepts are not definitions. Mtt can explain what prototype theory made its name on, fuzziness of boundaries. Theories apply to the world in a fuzzy manner. Not all evidence is equally good evidence for a theory.
