What is criminology? (1) scientific explanation of socially disapproved behavior. Crime (legal term: talks about what it is, how do we know if something is a crime. Different from what is considered to be normal or morally correct. Thinks about why someone committed that action. (looks at social conditions) Psychology: abnormal behavior (what happened in their brain) Sociology: it was previously seen as a deviant behavior. Religion: was seen as sinful (2) criminal justice system. What are the components and procedures: police (arrests someone) (detection, court (go through court to be proven guilty) (judgment, correction (if guilty, will receive punishment) (3) penology. Normally include some intellectual question that includes thinking and arguing: ex: should we bring back death penalty, ex2: should we allow torture? (4) victimology. People wanted to know religious reasons for criminal behavior. Bad behaviors in reference to supernatural forces (2) utilitarianism (classical theory, 18th century)
