Today we look at convergence and homogenization of policy in the neoliberal period. 1950-80s social programs credited with narrowing the gap between poverty and wealth. Today, governments that supported efforts ended up passing policy that cutback social programs and further helped to widen the gap between rich and poor again. Neoliberal economics: liberalization of trade, privatization of social programs/services, deregulation, reduction in social spending. Efforts to change the way we think about society. Shift from thinking of collective goals to individual goals; thinking of ourselves and only ourselves; autonomy. University used to be in public interest; collective goal; now when we talk about education we tend to talk about individual people, individual chance at a better future.
