Puritans close all theatres in 1642; parliament replaces king. Charles ii returns and loves the arts & sciences so shit happens now. John wilmot, second earl of rochester; a pretty sleazy guy: court poet; satires the king sometimes, is punished. Elizabeth barry: early actor among females in england; very famous, lover of wilmot; plays hellena in rover, theatre and theatres. Companies publicly licensed; limited number of speci c companies- 2 in fact: different actors, different playwright preferred (like hollywood"s studio era) In 1662 charles declares women and only women may play women on stage.
