Document Summary
Atolls: lagoon region, when the coral reefs protecting the lagoon get built up very high, these are called atolls, predicted by charles darwin. Iceland is on a divergent boundary and a hotspot. Divergent: plates move apart and create new lithosphere, the magma bubbles up and then freezes into solid rock forming a mountain along the boundary, causes shallow earthquakes. If oceanic and continental plates collide, one is pulled into the mantle and recycled: subduction, the rock gets melted down and then the magma rises up to form volcanoes, deep earthquakes. If it is two continental plates, they collide and form mountains. *draw the three, label magma, volcano, where earthquakes happen. If you have three stations in different places, you can tell exactly where the earthquake happened. 1968 lynn sykes (1937 - present: almost all earthquakes happen along the features, mor earthquakes occur only along ridges and connecting faults.
