Questions, what do we know of confucius, what was new about his ideas, what was new about neo confucianism, how did it shape education and society in song china and joseon choson. Improved methods: tang women did not bind their feet anymore, foot binding took off with the tang-song, was fashionable for entertainers around 10th century, foot binding for rich women, growth of money economy, commercial revolution. Led to fiscal crisis from paying nomadic neighbours: problem part 2- jurchens. Jurchens were another tribe: they were forest-dwelling agricultural villagers not nomads. In 1127 captured the emperor huizong: neo confucianism, cheng brothers (cheng yi and cheng hao, zhu xi 1130-1200 extended the cheng brother"s teachings. Important ideas: qi (vital energy- essence, li- principle, pattern, coherence, different from character from ritual, dao. Implemented confucian teachings: neo confucian transformations, first 250 years of joseon, sought to recreate the golden age of chinese antiquity, restructure family- patrilineal pattern, buddhist temples lost official support.
