Today we know: ecosystem health suffers -> functions of these ecosystems become so impaired that it transforms to a much less desirable state e. g. desertification in africa. # and kinds of living organisms in a given area evolution generates biodiversity. 2 elements: interspecific variation or species diversity, intraspecific variation or gene diversity studied by ecologist within a species no genetic variation = no biodiversity genealogical hierarchy of life. Loss of biodiversity influences ecosystem health(how ecosystem functions naturally in terms of water erosion, climate, soils etc. ) A waste to lose species that we might need in the future economic benefits genetic & chemical resources may serve adaption solutions human well-being inextricably linked to the natural world. Hawaii, despite its small area, hosts many endemics.
