Astounding diversity of birds represented on people"s hats. Fashion started in france and lots of hunting for a few decades. Number of bird species driven close to extinction. Two women in boston started audubon society. Successful in lobbying to get ban on imported feathers. Prohibits hunting of non-game species and insectivorous birds. Feathers are the most complex integumentary structures of all vertebrates. Looking at form and function relationships in feathers has helped us in terms of looking at fossil records and inferring ecology of dinosaurs. Present in reptiles and birds in beta form. Birds have sub-family of at least 4 types of avian beta keratin. Could be open pennaceous or closed pennaceous. Natal down will be lost but follicles are not lost, and birds will grow regular contour feathers from them.
