Forms restrict what an author can say. Important in specific genre they"re engaged in. Washington: directly in dialogue with slave narratives. Genre she"s working in limits what she"s able to say. Can be written from person who has escaped slavery. Some may have white benefactor helping them write because it"s illegal for slaves to read and write. Authenticated by white writer/publisher (even if it was fiction) Emancipation -> audience = not interested in slave narratives anymore. Washington had to do something different with narrative. Civil war = not just in the past, but still in the present (faulkner) Founding document about freedom = about unfreedom. 1863: lincoln put slavery on the table. Civil war: was about slavery but partly wasn"t. Davis: worried about growing north in population and power (lose voice and ability to lose their culture of slavery; didn"t want to be dictated by federal government) Sherman: destroyed everything so no southerner can rise again.
