English 140 Lecture ­ March 1 2013 Better Living Through Plastic Explosives ­ it's not realism ­­> fantastic things happen ­ it deals in superlatives ­­> the strongest, the fastest, the best, the most ­ the new neighbour is not just a carnivore, he is the lord of the grill ­ you need to understand the difference between romance and realism in order to enjoy  literature ­ the stories are set in an alternate near­future because Gardner is interested in  commenting on the present ­ worry about environment and ourselves, our souls ­ the stories are satires ­ satire magnifies its targets ­ "I've been thinking a lot about what it means to be a satirist in today's self­satirizing  world. Satire, at least the way I try to practice it­­the dark humored, take few prisoners  kind­­is not mockery or mere parody, but a hard look at our society's foibles and  cruelties under the microscope while electro­magnifying 50x or 1500x. Besides  magnification, it involves reversals and formerly....." Gardner ­ how do you write satire in a world that is always already satirizing itself? "Cul­de­Sac" Mentality in Zsuzsi Gardner's "Summer of the Flesh Eater" ­ people in Better Living live "at the edge" ­­> out of time and out of space ­ why does it matter that some of the stories take place on cul­de­sacs? ­ A FRYE QUOTE: ­ "Small and isolated communities surrounded with a physical or psychological  "frontier", separated from one another and from their American and British cultural  sources: communities that provide all that their members have in the way of  distinctively human values, and that are compelled to feel a great respect for the law
