Fundamental nature of consciousness is the ability to think. Clare"s psychological turmoil: asking himself whether he could think, and whether he could be. Psychiatrists come into being at the end of the 19th century. Argue that people with psychological disorders needed to be placed in asylums. Very few people ever got out of asylums. Near the end of his life clare suffered from delusions. Due to his being harmless, was allowed to walk through the asylum into the village. Poems about what it means to be lost to the world, what it means to be utterly isolated, how it feels to live in the world when people have forgotten you. Ghost poems: poems that articulate a sense that clare feels he has become a ghost he"s still there, but no body knows he"s haunting the place.
