Env333 lecture 2: the economist or consumerist worldview. Lynn white - the historical roots of our ecological crisis. Looking at this as a cultural historian who looks at technology. Looked at judeo-christian traditions and genesis, the first book of the bible. Looked at this notion of the human, commanded by the divine, to fill the earth and subdue it and the christian theological tradition led to a dismissal of this life for a paradisal of the next life. What was really important was the afterlife and permanetny heavenly existence rather than what is done here. What we"re really interested in is getting to heaven. The spiritual life and physical life was dichotomize and what was most important was getting to heaven. Focus on getting the human to heaven, not other species and creation living life to their fullest. Says there"s been a murder - a genocide. Christianity is the most anthropocentric religion the world has ever known - human centered.
