Greece, want to give image of parthenon being part of culture of refined east and at the same time making it clear that this is mainland greece, coming from the soil . West: in the back: but when you first come on parthenon you see the back first. Ionic frieze starts from back and then comes all the way to the front: just as you were a panethinaic prossession, you would be going in the exact same pattern.
