FAH230H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Triptych, Antichrist, Oil Painting
Document Summary
Not displayed in church bc its so negative connotation- private collection. Triptych is shifting from religious subjects to profane subjects. Unity in the 3 wings vs the van eyck"s where theres no full unity- seem separate spaces instead of the unification of the landscape here in bosch"s. Scenes from passions of christ in the surrounding. Breaking the post where bread becomes the boyd of christ and the wine his blood- when this opens his body is cut into two- alludes to the sacrifice of christ and the salvation of humanity. Start of christinaity on the inside and the end of it mass of st gregory here. Vertical line from chalice to christ where the wine is also the blood/sacrifice of christ- exemplifying his sacrifice- he is placed at the centre. Bosch brought back the tradition of the triptych for different purposes.
