Brunelleschi and Masaccio: The Method of Linear

Filippo Brunelleschi, solved the
problem of the dome that has remained
unsolved for 50 years. (1420-36)
oBuild dome on a high drum (to
have a base that can support the
structure at the top, and to create
a illuminating space in the
interior) and executing the dome in segments, creating
a solid structure.
oHow did he get this solution? He went to see ancient
buildings, studied the method of centering vaults and
other systems of support, explored Ancient’s (in
Rome) method of building and their use of harmonious
oSolution: Double shell (interior and exterior) – 8 ribs,
on the exterior, the ribs are covered by marble. 18 ribs
in the interior.
Thanks to that project, was asked to create the Foundling
Hospital, 1421-44. Orphanage. Rich citizens, provide space for poor
citizens in need.
Round opening made with glazed terracotta (technique
made in Florence).
Infants (made beautiful) to show the
building’s use symbolically and gives the
building a touch of color.

so the building looks symmetrical.
