Brief overview of the course: some of the topics that will be looked at: Visuality deals with the visual experience and how it can change. It can involve anything from a studio portrait to everyday life. The mechanics of seeing were not really understood until the 17th c in. Europe, but asian studies was relatively advanced in the 11th c. Seeing involves a cultural filter what we see in an old art piece may not be what people saw at the time. Colonialism brought in western styles to the east and eastern styles in the west. The term nations was technically a new concept. The 1900"s saw a rise of national imagery. The look of printed money was renovated as well using the faces of important individuals on the paper bills was a novelty. Will also be reviewing sensualities and the jazz scene in china.
