1. continued on boreal biome – focusing on the social cultural benefits of the boreal
biome. Listen to recording for list of important reasons. Incredible amount of
biodiversity – much of this sustains indigenous people. Extending from far east to
Yukon (pei is only non boreal containing province)
2. home to numerous indigenous people. First nations, inuit and metis, predominant
mixed peoples. Huron indat no longer found here because driven out. Know 3
indigenous groups and be able to locate them on this map for exam.
3. Because boreal forest produces such a diversity of plants, and the understory and
fungi, the indigenous peoples use these resources in many ways. Utilitation uses,
pine forming snowshoes or a lento, plants also critically important to their spirit
and spiritually with nature. Idea of planting a tree instead of a headstone in his
culture.
4. Plants are completely pervasive in communities that call this boreal forest home.
Also emphasise it is not just utilitarian purposes. Massive natural subsidy to the
household economy. Not just a need of displacing the need to purchase food but
also the materials are part of their local economy(if accessible). Most of these
communities don’t have local food security – therefore if they cannot find enough
of the right type of calories (often can only access unhealthy, processed food, high
in sugars and salts that lead to health issues). Wild meats, whole diversity of
plants. Natural env is incredibly important in sustaining healthy populations.
Sometimes the land is too poisonous to produce healthy food.. (woodland caribou
with northern bc example due to clearcutting and trophy hunting) also cultural
reasons people are isolated from the land- new technologies and elders not
spending enough time with the new generation because they are not interested.
E.g. hunting seals and polar bears can be best hunted when present on the ice in a
hole (wait and then shoot it and harvest all the parts) – ice is in such an uncertain
spot with global warming that it is even more dangerous, have to know where to
sit-KNOWLEDGE OF LAND NO LONGER THERE.. lack of access to safe food
is a major driver and determiner of the health of indigenous people – colonialism
has alienated these people from their lands and this is part of the reason for this
unhealthiness (no seals, babies have drown. Caribou have tumours. Etc) - **cant
access the healthy food their generations they have for years, also the quality of
food at these northern stores is very poor quality and the price is through the
rough. – price becomes a disincentive for healthy living. Critical in maintaining
economy but also the health of these people
a. In addition to the treaties, all indigenous people have rights in section 35
of the constitution. Additionally indigenous people have more rights from
the un – declaration of right for indigenous people (UNDRP), signed by
all countries but 4 (aus, new Zealand, usa, Canada) because of how hight
their populations are of indigenous peoples. In 2010 he said that he would
not be legally bound by that treaty but only aspirational bind. Finally this
