Document Summary

Interspecific competition for light drives structural dynamics of stands through time. Absorption of light by different pigments that plants have. Plant pigments help them determine if they are in the open or in the understory. Seedlings grow faster under green shade cloth is that they absorb different light as opposed to being shaded by a black shade cloth. Spacing trial: plant plantations of trees, want to know how densely to plant them, try different densities and figure out what"s best to grow wood, have different densities. If plant seedlings densely they"ll get less light. As density goes up, the height growth of seedlings goes up because less light available: = shade avoidance response. But we want to look at variation around the average. Cv vs density: coefficient of variation (the 2 green arrows -amount of spread, coefficient of variation goes up. Spacing trail results: competition leads to size inequality.
