Desakota -desa= village or rural area -Kota= city -didn't want to use a western term to define something specific to SEA -desakota= rurban: defines both function and landscape -the city does not replace the city side, they co-exist next to each other -time-space contraction: cheap transportation from countryside to city within a day -economic change Conditions of desakotasi -dense population of smallholders -continual increase in non-agricultural activities > people also work in factories, sell small things such as phone cards -desakotasi was only a transitional phase in urbanization >phase of divergence in the urbanization process * First phase of convergence 19880-1930 -recreate suburban lifestyle in colonial cities Phase of divergence 1940-1960 -indigenous people trying to get access to the city 1970 convergence between USA and sea cities -
