(which is densely populated) Critical economy approach: where they are situated in global economy. Idea rural is created by ppl who live there and don"t live there. Functionalist approach: landscape is organized in a particular way to perform certain functions. Critical economy approach: consider why there are certain things happening in rural environment in relation to global/broader structures, consider why that building is so run down, consider what happened to the farmer (possible struggles) Social construction approach: consider what the setting means, remote, peace, quiet, close family ties, calming, hard work vs. leisurely drives around the countryside (for scenery) Earl butz: agriculture is for producing more food. Farming = commercial operation not, not family operation. Average person spends 16% of income on food (very low) Over production of corn mainly used for non-food uses.
