GGR124H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Signage, List Of Neighbourhoods In Toronto, Minaret
Document Summary
Immigration regulation at national scale has direct impact on urban space and social geography: impacts local space , idea of who gets in . Important sites of local conflict: land use conflicts, places of worship, ethnic enclave retailing, settlement services. Spatial mismatch of settlement services: type 1: mismatch of location of jobs and location of immigrant communities, type 2: mismatch of settlement services. Settlement services: language services, community grants, language programs, job training and searches, emergency housing for refugees etc. that help immigrants settle. Initially many immigrants used to live in the downtown core of toronto so many settlement services are still there. This is a problem as many immigrant families are now moving out of the downtown core into the suburbs and even in the 905 areas of mississauga, brampton, vaughan, richmond hill. Immigrants now make up 40% of the mississauga, brampton, vaughan, and richmond hill communities.
