Germany has always been a very big producer, china has been growing fast. 2007 135,500 direct jobs in automobile manufacturing (assembly and parts plants) so it"s a huge industry in canada. Consider the spin offs as well automobile dealerships, etc, accounts for over 440,000 jobs. Over 400,000 are in ontario (vastly concentrated in ontario) So consider the current crisis in terms of the future of our country. Canada"s largest export larger than oil and gas 16% of nation"s exports in 2007. The industry is concentrated in a corridor between windsor and oshawa. One historic reason for this is that auto industry is focused in michigan in the states. Canada: prior to 60s, the canadian industry was separate from usa industry. In canada production. we had car manufacturers making cars for canadian market, some were local.
