Flexible agile workers are increasingly demanded: workers become adaptable and can tolerate high levels of change. Lemke argues that there is a neoliberal harmony between individual body and collective bodies and institutions: contradicts bodily experiences of workers under lean manufacturing at gm. Increase in carpel tunnel syndrome and other rsis. Increased overtime: poorer quality parts, result of increased subcontracting because now the companies were not making many of the parts required to build the car, risks also increasingly individualized. There is no one lean: lean production varies by country, union, company, plant, but spreading across the globe, shows how local plant politics, culture and history, national frameworks for labour relations, previous management initiatives all shape outcomes. Advantages and disadvantages for workers and management: varies by company and by sector as well. Lean management techniques spreading far beyond the factory to include service sector (principle of teamwork, continuous flow models, waste elimination: being applied in health care, banking, insurance, retail, etc.
