Market economy involvement (lack of it) as cause of backward agricultural practices. Rocheleau et al: unidimensional focus: only on one aspect of a much broader situation, interventions only designed to fix this one narrow aspect. This can contribute to more problems and experiences of crises for people down the line. All too often, development practitioners enter an area looking for a certain problem, find it, and then design a solution. Side note: recent earthquake raises issue of who got relief, who didn"t; charity efforts all caught up in power relations. Dev narrative usually describes it as a small landlocked country, locked away from the world until the 1950s. Actually migration and trade has been happening for a long time, lots of intercontinental movements. Rana regime: royal family ruling nepal, had close relations with the british. Nepal has never been colonized, but did experience internal class exploitation.
