A recognized characteristic of the post-industrial city is the aesthetification" of the built environment: redeveloped waterfronts, arts districts, gentrified neighbourhoods and heritage spaces. Word heritage" is associated with inheritance" (i. e. something transferred from one generation to another) May describe material forms (e. g. monuments, architectural and historical relics/remains) and immaterial forms (e. g. traditions, philosophies, art) Built heritage as historic structures, buildings and sites: categories, monuments (sculptures, architectural works), groups of buildings (separate or connected), sites (archaeological) Buildings should be capable of lasting 300 years (architect christopher alexander) Average life of many contemporary buildings is 30-40 years (rypkema 2005: every building is potentially immortal, but very few last half the life of a human. (brand 1994) Patterns of habitation are provisional, transformed by the ebb and swell of residency and subject to forces that work with the sluggishness of the millennial erosion of stone, or with the speed of a stray spark.
