Jge331 lecture 7: (un)natural disasters: the social metabolism of risk. Need to think of them as national disasters and these environmental hazards being natural and being shaped by biophysical processes but also by social influences. What are the social contours in terms of primarily bears burden of environmental risks. In late october and early november of 1993, several large urban wildfires broke out in the hills surrounding north and west los angeles. Oct. 26-27, malibu, 39,000 acres burned, 24 homes destroyed. Oct. 28, laguna beach, 366 homes destroyed, 65 firefighters injured, million in damages. Nov. 2nd, malibu, 18,500 acres burned, 350 homes destroyed, 3 deaths. Total value of insured losses in excess of billion. Worst of the 20th century (as of the time of davis"s writing), killing 10 people, burning over 400 homes including one belonging to then ca governor ronald. Since 1970, five catastrophic fires have burned malibu.
