Moral economy as a response to poliical economy. Poliical economy: comes out in the sixteenth-nineteenth century. Poliics have to work in tangent to the economy. A verical line creates forms of hierarchy. Certain people would control certain aspects of the economy. Quesion of the role on the individual, and what the concept means to historians. We don"t think of historical actors before the french revoluion. We don"t see the vast majority of people in society as historical actors. Assumes that historical actors have a self-regulaing form of their individual self. Evoluion has made us a powerful social species the relaionship with the individual self and their relaionships with other people. Jean jacques rousseau declared in the social contract, man is born free, yet everywhere he is in chains. General will we are never as free as individuals than we are as free individuals of a larger group. He did not mean physical chains, but social ones.
