Clemenceau new that france was exhausted and knew that it survived the war just because of british help. Clemenceau then asked in turn of asking for the rhine land for a promise from the british and americans to help france should she be attacked by germany in future. The british offered to guarantee to help the french if they were attacked by germany in future. The area of the rhineland was to be under the league of nations for 15 years and was not to be militarized.
