Atlantic slave trade the first blacks in america. Blacks played important roles in early colonization, by expanding european rule, and resisting it. Moving beyond the euro-indian binary of the americas, and the idea that all blacks in america were slaves. There were sizable communities of black africans in spain and portugal (iberia) before. Early black africans in caribbean did not therefore arrive via the middle passage from africa. In order to take them with them, the early settlers had to pay for a license. Caribbean officials were worried about resistance, and believe the slaves were a bad influence on the indians, due to paganism and revolt. So only allowed to go to caribbean if they were born in iberia, or lived there for a while and were baptised. Black africans involved in the pacification of several caribbean islands. First shipment of black africans arrived from africa in hispaniola in 1518.
