Querelle des femmes (don"t have to read entire book for final essay) Who wrote about women"s roles? religious, educated, men wrote on what an ideal women should be. Women as an undifferentiated category: unified category, general pronouncements. Relational definition of women: life cycles, defined by relationship with men (eg. daughters). Classical antiquity and judeo christian tradition: men accepted ideas of women were slowly transformed into accepted truths, ideas of what women were, were established by greek and roman antiquity, and christianity. Sources" bias: they weren"t questioned until the renaissance because men controlled production of knowledge. Women had limited influence on intellectual sources before renaissance. Prescriptive sources (theories vs practices: outlined ideas of how women should behave (laws, religious texts), but don"t tell us how women actually (reality) behaved.
