There was much enthusiasm for the idea of domestic motherhood. There is a focus on the idea of breastfeeding, aristocratic women are criticized. Men were the only ones suited to the public sphere. The women considered virtuous were increasingly removed from the public spheres. Was tied with the ideas of masculinity at the time. Viewed as the activity that was the most suited to them. Women who did not follow this were seen as bad, respectable. The only real acceptable activity was charitable work. The outside world is seen as increasingly chaotic. Sheltered the family from the upheavals and changes that come with modernity. There was an idea that the home was a quiet place to retire after the day"s work. Style supposed to create a cosy interior and atmosphere. Was supposed to convey the idea of a calm environment. There was blame placed upon the servant if the husband was to have an affair.
