Lithuanians organized and became major enemy in east. Duke of poland wanted to send crusaders to subdue prussian tribes. Teutonic order arrived in regions with the goal of conquering and converting tribes to orthodoxy. Danger of germans --> began to unite against them. Mindaugas managed to unite the lithuanians and create a state. Mindaugas wanted to expand, but had to face german threat on border. Mindaugas was baptised and received crown by pope anointing him. "king of lithuania and rus" --> challenge to russian prince, clash. Father was killed by tatar when he was young. Was able to co-opt, rise in power, eventually became khan ("king") East katars killed his father --> destroyed them. 1206: was so successful he became genghis khan "universal ruler" Still had enemies, expanded to china, central asia, middle east, eventually caucas, eastern europe. Russians did not hear about him until the last minute (ie too late)
