America was virtuous compared to european states nature contrasted to monarchy. This virtuousness required the citizens in the republic to be self-suf cient, they needed to be able to own their own land and make a living from it. If they could support themselves, they were likely to lose their virtuousness. This connects to agrarianism because people are expected to own their own land.
