December 1954, Taiwan represented nationalist with USA of defending each

- Bandung Conference: 1955, China, India, Turkey, Indonesia, forming this alliance
against the anti-communist and represented them as anti-nuclear representatives
Indonesia -> dual nationalities policy, lots of Chinese in Inodnesia
- Taiwan: 1950s, GB would supportive of PRC if they dropped Taiwan issues and on
Taiwan’s side thought that they would give some island to PRC then USA would
support them more
- Nationalities: discovery of 54 nationalities within the republic and the rest were Han
Chinese

these nationalities were distinguished of language and region
this model of ruling party and with different ethinicites it was a very soviet like
communist party in charge and awareness of differences -> different nationalities
within the nation

by 1950, Jiang controlled and as president of Taiwan
- he declared the civil war of anti-communist was on going and very against the Reds
about 2 million main leaders followed jiang and became dominated in Taiwan society
and know as people of the outside province [ wai shen ren ]
- many people were living in taiwan before wai shen ren came
in 1947 -> Jiang sent retainers in taiwan to purge anything violence, and continued
- marshal laws: no new political party, tight control of newspaper, there were only
supplementary elections when someone died

- the focus until 1950s were light industry then chemical rubber and paper, then in
1970s : taiwanese electricity -> stock market as well
- late 60s: export -processing zones: designed to draw foreinger investers, cheap
labors, less tax, helped taiwanese’ economy boomb
- in 1975: jiang died
- the hundred flowers
we are at 1956 and end of first five year plan
hundred flowers incident : since the founding of PRC there hadnt been a lot of
emphasize on intellectuals from aboard studies, they were independent thinkers
and bring people together to protest against government
