Document Summary

Elements of competition were not as present in northern europe than in italy. Northern europe was still largely a feudal world. Northern towns were not as large and did not have the same concentration of wealthy townsmen. The culture of the north was infused with the church (italy was much more secular) Italian banks had branches in northern europe, which allowed for the italian models to be known in that region. 1494: king charles of france invaded italy, ending its independence, as well as bringing thousands of french knights to the peninsula (another point of contact) The world of princes in italy came to resemble the system in northern europe. A new middle class was created (every new group looks for ideologies to define themselves) Across europe townsmen began rejecting the ideologies of the middle ages. Social mobility had been seen as an affront to god (god put you where you were and you should not try to change it)
