Self-conscious, secular movement, changing one"s relationship with god and that of their community. The 12th century resulted in a huge recovery of roman law. And it"s reintroduction into society directly challenged feudal law. Roman law brought newfound interest to ancient rome, especially from the 12th-14th. This changed the way we saw the ancient world, now institutionalizing the separation of the church and state. Romans were pagan after all, so pagan tradition was bound to seep into culture. Born outside his native city (florence) due to his father in exile and traveling to avignon for work in a legal field.
