Document Summary

Transposable elements: movement of small segments of dna from one position to another within the genome. (barbara mcclintock) This dna can jump out of the genome and replicate independently of a normal process of replication. One strain of corn frequently had a break in chromosome. 9 as a result of a ds element that is activated by an ac element. The ac element is an unlinked genetic factor (respective to the ds element) Barbara postulated that these ac and dc elements are mobile elements. She could not locate ac to a chromosome, so she determined it was jumping around the genome. The ds locus occurs on chromosome 9. Slide 5- 6: unusual phenotypes caused by the ds. Ds is located on the chromosome, downstream of the three loci that control seed colour. When the ac fragment is present, the piece of chromosome 9 that ds is located on will be excised as an acentric fragment.
