Document Summary
Variation in phenotype as a whole (vp) all the different ways genes can contribute to phenotypic variation. If all of the variation is attributable to genotypic variation, h2 will approach 1 (maximum) If all the variation is attributable to environmental effects, then h2 will approach 0 (minimum) It is calculated from a certain family and thus only applicable to this family on which the calculations were performed high value = genotype is important in determining whether the quantitative trait arises due to segregation of particular alleles. H2 will not tell us what is happening in other families and other environments. It is not good for comparing groups. H2 does not have predictive properties - we cannot predict the phenotype of the progeny on the basis of the phenotype of their parents, even if h2 is high. This is because vg includes factors that do not directly transmit from parents to offspring ( additive effects, dominant effects, epistatic effects).
