Document Summary

Lecture 3: muscle and nerve tissue, and blood. Involuntary cardiac (striated) and smooth muscle: both under the control of the autonomic nervous system. Terminology: muscle cells are referred to as muscle fibres, cytoplasm sarcoplasm, cell membrane sarcolemma, mitochondria sarcosomes, smooth er sarcoplasmic reticulum, all muscle is derived from the mesoderm. Hmb302: fundamental unit of the muscle fibre is the sarcomere (~2. 5 m in length, contractile unit of the skeletal muscle fibre, structure of the myofibres: In cross section find one heavy dot for every 6 light dots: find parallel thick and thin filaments myofilaments (protein) 2 distinct cells glued together by the endomysium loose connective tissue family: made of reticular fibers. Identify as one sarcomere unit: they do not appear in smooth muscle -- dense bodies in smooth muscle instead and they are analogous to the z lines. Z-line to the z-line is the contractile unit.
