The revolutions of 1848 were just some of the many events that saw groups attempt to establish independent nation states. Many of these national projects would not be realised until much later. The 19th century saw many changes in the russian empire. In an effort to modernized russia began looking to the west (especially france) However during the second half of the 19th century it also sought to develop its own national identity. Opera was an important genre for expressing russian identity. Mikhail glinka (1804-1857) composed operas that celebrated the russian empire and its leader. 1862 anton rubinstein creates the st. petersburg conservatory.
