In the 60s and 70s he looked to funk and fusion, as seen on albums like in a silent way (1969) and the experiment bitches brew (1970) John trane coltrane was born september 23, 1926 in north carolina. Most of his childhood raised by his mother. Started on alto saxophone, played this in the navy. When he returned, he studied with jimmy heath. Picked up tenor sax and was inspired by coleman hawkins, ben webster and tab smith. Heard saxophonist charlie parker play, his playing motivated trane. He played with bird later on, and recorded some tracks. Biggest break was with miles davis quintet. Contacted by miles davis in 1955 to join the quintet. The first great quintet ended up disbanding because of lots of heroin usage.
