Document Summary
Setting the right tone: a case for elementary school music education in ontario. Most people agree that elementary school students benefit from a music education. Indeed, there are so many benefits to learning an instrument that no ontario elementary school student should be deprived of this pleasurable educational opportunity. First, some opponents of musical education feel that it is not as important as more practical subjects like math and science. In an editorial for maclean"s magazine, conservative political commentator timothy dalrymple argues against publically-funded k-12 music education. He claims that canada has a lax [public] education system, which privileges creativity and personal expression over accomplishment in the more serious disciplines (dalrymple 22). Consequently, according to dalrymple, canadian students are failing to keep up with their international counterparts and need to abandon subjects like music in order to redouble the emphasis on math, science, and literacy (25). There are several serious problems with his claim.
