Right at the cusp from pictographic to logographic / phonemic writing system. Often a series of pictures and writing in small chunks in and around it. Words - usually for place names, or names of people who have been conquered. /wa/ phonetic to reinforce /siwa/ reading instead of /nan/ mother Words are not used for text but for daily use of random words. Picture writing worked better because people were able to read better. Down in columns and there are 2 glyphs per column. Ltr horizontal script, but only 2 glyphs long and goes in columns. Maya writing survived in the yucatan up until the spanish conquest. He believed that maya writing was purely semantic/symbolic, not writing at all. 1950s knorosov figured out the phonemic nature of the script. Met with hostility from thompson and the west (criticized) Worked out that much of monumental writing was recounting history. Figured out how dates work - which were actual dates in history.
