LIN228H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Roundedness, Trachea, Articulatory Phonetics
Document Summary
Phonetics is the branch of linguistics concerned with the study of articulation, perception, and the physical properties of speech sounds in natural languages. Phonetics is different from phonology as where phonology studies sound groupings, patterns, and the relationship between sounds, phonetics is concerned with the sounds in themselves. There are three different main branches of phonetics, each dealing with different areas of the study of sounds. Articulatory phonetics is concerned with the production of speech sounds and the physiological mechanisms of speech production. Articulatory phonetics also seeks to understand how speech sounds are planned and executed by language users. Acoustic phonetics is the branch of phonetics that is concerned with the physical properties of sounds being produced. Acoustic phonetics analyzes the sound waves produced as a result of speech, as well as the different ways that the sound waves can be affected. Auditory phonetics has to do with the perception of speech sounds by other speakers.
